How kundli matching works
In Vedic astrology, eight kootas are compared from the Moon sign and birth nakshatra of the bride and groom. Together they are called Ashtakoot and carry 36 points (gunas). Traditionally, more than 18 gunas is considered good for marriage, and more than 28 an excellent match.
Matching by date, time and place of birth is the most accurate, because it gives the exact position of the Moon. When birth details are not known, the nakshatra pada is taken from the first syllable of the name — this is called name-based guna milan.
Frequently asked questions
How many gunas should match for marriage?
Traditionally 18 or more gunas are considered good. Nadi and Bhakoot dosha are still checked separately, so the decision should not rest on the total alone.
What if the time of birth is not known?
Choose "I don't know the time". The calculation then assumes 12 noon. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so the nakshatra may differ — the result will show a warning.
How accurate is matching by name?
Name-based matching is useful when birth details are not available. It takes the nakshatra from the first syllable of the name, which can differ from the actual birth nakshatra.
